Like all medications, oxycodone can cause side effects in some people, but many people have no or only minor side effects. The higher the dose of oxycodone the more chance that you will get side effects. Do not take any other medications to treat oxycodone side effects without first consulting a pharmacist or doctor. More than one in every 100 people experience these common oxycodone side effects. You can help yourself cope by doing the following:
Constipation : Try to include more high-fibre foods in your diet such as fruits, vegetables and cereals. Drink several glasses of water per day. If you are able, gentle exercise may also be beneficial. Enquire with your doctor about medications that can help prevent or treat constipation caused by oxycodone.
nausea or vomiting : Eat simple meals and avoid rich or spicy foods. It may be beneficial to take your oxycodone just before or after a meal or snack (without chewing if it’s a tablet). This may alleviate symptoms of illness.
If you’re being sick, try small frequent sips of water to avoid dehydration. Peeing less than usual or having dark, strong-smelling pee are both signs of dehydration.
If you take birth control pills and become ill, your contraception may not protect you from pregnancy. Check the pill package for instructions.
This side effect usually goes away after a few days. If the sickness persists, consult a doctor about taking anti-sickness medication.
Discomfort in the stomach : Try to rest and relax. Eating and drinking slowly, as well as eating smaller and more frequent meals, can be beneficial. Applying a heat pad or a covered hot water bottle to your stomach may also be beneficial. If you are in a lot of pain, speak to your pharmacist or doctor.
Are you sleepy or tired? : These side effects should subside within a week or two as your body adjusts to the oxycodone. Consult a doctor if the symptoms persist.
Dizziness and a spinning sensation : Lie down until the dizziness subsides, then slowly rise. Move slowly and deliberately. If you are dizzy, do not drive, cycle, or operate tools or machinery.
Confusion or a lack of awareness : If you are unsure, consult a doctor. Your dose may need to be adjusted.
Headaches : Rest and drink plenty of fluids are essential. It is best not to drink alcohol while taking oxycodone because it can aggravate headaches. It is safe to take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Consult a doctor if your headaches last more than a week or are severe.
Itching or a rash : It may be beneficial to take an antihistamine, which is available from a pharmacy. Consult your pharmacist to determine which type is best for you. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, consult a doctor as you may need to try a different pain reliever.
