There is nothing better than waking up on a Saturday morning and realizing that you have the rest of the week off. We’ve all had breakfast in bed, from croissants and bagels to fried eggs; however, it’s not just the possibility of food stains that can make us wonder, “How often should I wash my bed sheets?”
Naturally, there will be divergent views on how frequently (or whether at all) a given household chore should be completed. We spend one-third of our lives in bed, which means we leave behind 56 hours of sweat, body oils, and dead skin cells every week.
Is there a recommended frequency for changing bed linens?
Philip Tierno, Jr., Ph.D., director of clinical microbiology and immunology at NYU Langone Medical Center, recommends weekly sheet washing as a bare minimum.
That’s because, as Tierno explains, as soon as you hit the sheets, you’re infecting them with your constantly-shedding skin (you lose millions of skin cells per day), lotions, makeup, sweat, hair, and whatever else you picked up during the day, including, but not limited to, pollen, pet dander, fungal mould, and dirt particles. All contain a bacterium load that is unhealthful. Bed sheets that aren’t washed frequently can aggravate existing health conditions, like asthma and allergies. You should change your sheets more often if you, your partner, your children, or anyone in your household is sick, if you sleep naked, or if you go to bed directly after exercising without first showering. Conditions outside are also important to consider. Because we perspire more during the day in warmer weather, our bed linens may experience more wear and tear in the summer months, depending on your personal hygiene habits.
In order to determine how often you will need to do laundry, you can ask yourself the following:
Question: “Are you a lone wolf when you go to bed?”
Do you sleep in your underwear?
Who do you sleep with if you don’t sleep solo?
How about your significant other?
What about your kids?
o Pets?
Do you take a bath or shower before turning in for the night?
To ask: “Have you been sick lately?”
Are you a bed eater?
How much do you perspire while you sleep?
Asking, “Do you stay in your own bed every night, or do you frequently travel?”
THERE ARE SUFFICIENT REASONS TO STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF REGULARLY CHANGING YOUR SHEETS, SO DO IT!
It’s just as important to know how often you should wash your sheets as it is to know how to wash them properly. It could be a matter of taste as to how often one washes their bed linens. But there are some valid reasons to regularly change and wash your bed linens. Of course, the most compelling argument is this: Make your bed every morning for the best feeling. Getting into a clean bed every night is like icing on the cake, if getting into bed every night is one of life’s fine pleasures. Making a bed takes a few minutes, but the satisfaction of getting in to sleep with clean sheets is well worth the time and effort.
