TECHNICAL POINT: THE LED
In recent years, many innovations have made it possible to develop the display and signage sector. Materials evolve, tools are digitized and uses are diversifying. One of the components that have made it possible to advance these sectors is the development of LEDs. Indeed, it is now involved in many areas, from lighting to signage and digital signage.
But what is an LED and why such versatility? This central element in the operation of giant screens has not finished surprising us. Long life, high intensity, reduced size, and low power consumption are among its many advantages.
THE LED AND ITS EVOLUTION
LED is the acronym for “light-emitting diode” or DEL for the electroluminescent diode in French. It is therefore an electronic component, a particular diode, which can emit light when an electric current passes through it.
They can be of different shapes. We have all known during our techno lessons about the DIP LED, the one composed of a small cylindrical bulb and its two very distinct legs, the anode and the cathode. It is still found as an indicator light on some devices.
However, it is no longer the most widespread. Indeed, the most widely used LED today is the so-called SMD screens for Self Mounting devices. It is smaller and flatter, it is soldered on the surface of the electronic circuits.
This type of LED offers excellent performance, emits little heat, and offers the best value for money. There are also other categories of light-emitting diodes such as ultra-powerful COB LEDs, micro-LEDs, and the OLED variant which uses organic materials.
